A Little About Streamwood Illinois
Streamwood is a northwest suburban village of Chicago located in Cook County Illinois. Streamwood is one of three villages that make up the “Tri-village” with the village of Bartlett and the village of Hanover Park.
Streamwood was a rural area full of dairy farms until the 1950’s. Streamwood soon became suburbia at the end of World War II and the Korean War. Subdivisions were being built like crazy all over the country with help from the GI Bill. Once the area had enough homes and residents the home builder applied for incorporation and Streamwood became official in 1957. In the early days the builders had control of Streamwood government and the town was in bad shape with lack of roads, high water and sewage rates and overcrowded schools. Soon the residents of Streamwood rallied to take back the government for the people and shortly after Streamwood development was back on track. Since the 80’s Streamwood has been growing commercially and residentially.
The village of Streamwood is very supportive of business and development. The village partners with businesses to conduct business retention programs and seeks ways to keep business competitive. Streamwood also has a streamlined development approval process.
Streamwood’s largest employer is the new Fresh Express plant at the old Duraco Products site.
The Sutton Park Shopping Center is a major retail area in Streamwood.
Most of Streamwood schools are part of the Elgin Area School District U46 which of one of the largest school districts in Illinois. Streamwood also has schools in Township District 211, School District 54, and Elgin Community College District 509.
Streamwood contains 12 schools of which the highest rated school is Hanover Countryside Elementary.
Parks and Rec
Streamwood has two park districts. Streamwood Parks District takes care of park land and provides programs for residents west of Barrington Road. Park land east of Barrington Road is serviced by Schaumburg Park district.
Streamwood Parks District takes care of over 50 parks and oversees more than 1000 public programs and events. Programs include sports, summer camps, fitness classes, preschool, and senior activities.
Pumpkinfest takes place every fall with kiddie run, game booths, pie eating contest, tractor pulled wagon rides and pumpkin themed competitions.
Shamrock Search takes place in the park where participants don their best green outfit and search for shamrocks to turn in for prizes. Participants can enjoy green punch and shamrock treats while listening to leprechaun stories and making crafts.
The Daddy/Daughter Dance is 50’s sock hop themed the evening includes dancing the night away, light dinner, games and prizes.
The Hoosier Grove Barn Courtyard is where kids can participate in the yearly free Easter Egg Hunt. Bring your own bag to collect your candy and meet the Easter Bunny.
Located at the southeast corner of the intersection of Irving Park Road and Route 59, Sutton Park is a large retail center in Streamwood with 260,000 square feet of retail space. The largest stores in this shopping center are Super Target and Marshalls. Other stores in Sutton Park include Panera Bread, Justice, Famous Footwear, Discovery Clothing, Chili’s and many more.
