Schaumburg is a city in Cook County Illinois located in the northeastern region of the state and a suburb of Chicago. Home to the headquarters of Motorola Solutions, one of America’s largest malls and one of just two IKEA stores in the entire state of Illinois the city of Schaumburg is full of opportunity being a spot on the Golden Corridor.

History

Schaumburg’s first name was actually Sarah’s Grove. The name Sarah’s Grove came from some of the township’s earliest settlers, three families that lived near a grove of woods in the northwest end all with a family member named Sarah. The earliest inhabitants of Schaumburg where Native Americans. Americans referred to as “Yankees” began to settle in the area and set up farms. In the 1830’s Johann Sunderlage a German-born man came to Schaumburg. Sunderlage was very instrumental in the development of early Schaumburg and returned home to Germany to bring his family and friends back with him to Schaumburg. By the 1850’s 48 percent of Schaumburg’s population was of German decent. In 1850 a meeting was held to rename the township from Sarah’s Grove where a wealthy landowner slammed his fist on the table and shouted in German the township was to be named Schaumberg after Schaumburg County in Germany where most of the German settlers were from. By 1870 Schaumburg was completely a German township and remained so until the Great Depression in 1930. German was the first language of most families in Schaumburg until the 1950’s.

At first Schaumburg was an isolated town full of farmland until the car became the main mode of transportation and the Northwest Tollway was built in 1956 through the farmlands. The expansion of Schaumburg in the 1960’s changed the area completely. Schaumburg went from a quiet rural community to a thriving metropolis suburb that it is today.

Woodfield Mall

Located at the intersection of Golf Road and Interstate 290, Woodfield Mall is the largest shopping center in Illinois and the 11^th largest shopping mall in the United States. Here you will find over 300 stores including the nation’s largest Sears store. The mall opened in 1971 and is a big piece of the Schaumburg economy and history. The Woodfield Mall brought attention to Chicago suburbs and spurred development like the Itasca Towers and corporate development in Hoffman Estates. Each year the mall attracts around 27 million visitors and is a top tourist attraction in the Chicago area.

Park District

Schaumburg’s Park District is award winning with over 1000 acres of park land and a wide range of recreational activities. The Schaumburg Park District includes the Spring Valley Nature Sanctuary, indoor family aquatic center, recreation center, five community swimming pools, three community fitness centers, two gymnasiums, two public golf courses, 53 athletic fields and 47 playground areas.

The Park District holds a number of programs every year as well as hosts musical and live theater performances. They also have a great recreational sports program for kids with just about every sport imaginable.

Library

The Schaumburg Library is award winning and one of the largest in the country. Here you will find over 630,000 different titles. The library is host to a number of public events including activities specifically for seniors, teens, and children and family events including movie nights.

Housing

There are a variety of home styles in Schaumburg from condos and townhomes to single family homes. The median home value in Schaumburg is $208,000 and homes can range in price from under $100,000 to over $1million. 66% percent of Schaumburg residents are homeowners. Schaumburg is highly supportive of affordable housing initiatives and offers first time buyers program, senior housing options, residential rehab assistance and transitional housing assistance.

The first large subdivision neighborhood of Schaumburg is Weathersfield. Started in 1959 this neighborhood has grown with 22 different building stages over two decades of construction and holds thousands of single family homes.

Schools

The public schools of Schaumburg are some of the greatest in Illinois. Most schools in Schaumburg are part of Schaumburg Township School District 54. The elementary schools in district 54 have received many awards including Blue Ribbon awards and Teachers Who Excel awards.

Schaumburg High is part of Township High School District 211. The high school has recently undergone renovations to update the outside and add classrooms, science labs and offices.

Sports programs at Schaumburg schools excel as well as academic ones. The test scores of Schaumburg schools excel national scores. Many young families seek to live in Schaumburg because of the excellent schools.

Popular Events

The Prairie Center is a 442 seat theater where residents can take in a local play or show as well as concerts by larger name groups. There is also a free outdoor concert series in the summer.

On Memorial Day weekend the Prairie Arts Festival brings in over 130 painters, sculptors, jewelry makers, photographers, potters and artists of every kind to display and sell their at a free festival. Guests can also take in live music, food truck court and children’s art activities.

Septemberfest is three days of arts and crafts displays, live entertainment, fireworks, Miss Septemberfest Competition, carnival, non-profit day, bingo and Labor Day Parade. The festival has been held for 45 years every September.

In November is the annual tree lighting ceremony with Santa, Caroling, live entertainment, refreshments and of course community tree lighting.
